New Delhi: Four public sector insurance companies have provided mental illness-related insurance cover to one lakh people during the past one year. The Mental Health Services Act, 2017 came into force from May 29 last year. According to this law, insurance companies provide medical insurance just like other illnesses to treat mental illness. In other diseases, insurance cover has to be provided on the same basis as in mental illness.

In August 2018, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDA) had asked insurance companies to comply with this provision of the law. "Public sector insurance companies have informed that nearly one lakh people across the country have been covered with mental illness treatment insurance," the Finance Ministry said in a communication to the Lok Sabha. IRDA said it had issued a circular in August last year. After that, 110 such products have been approved which cover mental illness. Many people in the country do not know about the treatment of mental diseases. Many people do not consider it to be a disease, while it is possible to treat it. It is believed that it will now create more awareness within the people.
