Indian boxer Nikhat Zareen has created history by winning the gold medal by defeating Thailand's boxer Jitpong Jutamas in the 52 kg weight category of the Women's World Boxing Championships in Istanbul. Earlier in the semi-finals, she faced Brazil's Caroline de Almeida. Former junior world champion Zareen remained calm in the middle of the bout and dominated her opponent as she registered a 5-0 unanimous decision victory in the 52kg category.

Six-time world champion MC Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny RL and Lekha C are Indian women boxers who have won world titles. Now Hyderabad's boxer Zareen has also joined this list. India's best performance in this competition has been in 2006 when the country won eight medals including four gold, one silver and three bronze.
