In the late 1990s, the serial Mahabharata was very famous on Doordarshan. It made a lot of artists well-known names. One of them was Varsha Usgaonkar. Marathi actress Varsha came to Bollywood after Mahabharata and got a lot of fame here. But when she was selected for the Mahabharata, she was barely 20 years old and was not recognized by the audience of Hindi. The story of Varsha's selection in the Mahabharata is interesting. By then, one or two of Varsha's Marathi films had come. She had signed some films. One day some guests came to her house and expressed their desire to see the shooting. Varsha took them to the sets of the serial Mahabharata in Mumbai itself. There were scenes of Abhimanyu (Arjun's son in Mahabharata) being shot and the maker-director was looking for an actress for the role of his wife Uttara.

Goofy Paintal, who played the role of Shakuni in Mahabharata, was one of the production designers of the serial and he saw Varsha that came with the guests and proposed to play the role of Uttara in front of them. Goofy had seen Varsha's work in Marathi films. Varsha was also a good dancer and Uttara's character required an actress who could dance. Varsha Usgaonkar had no reason not to be a part of the Mahabharata or not to play Uttara. She immediately said yes. Uttara and Arjun had a relationship of the disciple and the guru. Arjun had got his son Abhimanyu married to Uttara. The audience liked Varsha in the character of Uttara. She got recognition and benefited from it in Bollywood.

The same great dancer and the best actor Gopikrishna was also associated with Mahabharata. He was the choreographer of Varsha in the show. From them, Varsha got an opportunity to learn classical dance here. She rehearsed the classical dance for three days for the role of Uttara with Gopikrishna. Nitish Bhardwaj, who played the character of Sri Krishna on the set, was also an old relative of Uttara as both were from the Marathi film industry. Before Mahabharata, the two had worked together in three films.
