Selena Gomez decided not to attend the MTV Video Music Awards in Brooklyn this year. The singer, who is nominated for Best K-Pop Song alongside Blackpink for "Ice Cream," was not present on the red carpet. She was seen departing New York City earlier this week with friends and was pictured with them.

It's reasonable that Gomez didn't attend the presentation because she and Blackpink (from South Korea) were only nominated in one category. Since 2015, Gomez hasn't attended the VMAs. Gomez will also be absent from tomorrow's Met Gala 2021.

In the September 2021 edition of ELLE, Gomez discussed her future plans for her music career as she focuses more on acting. “I don't believe I'll ever stop producing music,” she added, adding that she still feels like she has to prove herself all the time. “I'm not saying I'd like to win a Grammy. I simply feel like I'm doing my best and that everything revolves around me. That can really irritate me at times.”

She went on to say that music is more intimate than acting because "you're emptying yourself out." She also spoke about her choice in 2017 to surrender control of her social media accounts and take them off her phone. Her aide manages her accounts, while Gomez adds photos and quotes.“I don’t have it [Instagram] on my phone, so there’s no temptation,” she said. “I suddenly had to learn how to be with myself. That was annoying because, in the past, I could spend hours looking at other people’s lives. I would find myself down nearly two years in someone’s feed, and then I’d realize, ‘I don’t even know this person!’ Now I get information the proper way. When my friends have something to talk about, they call me and say, ‘Oh, I did this.’ They don’t say, ‘Wait, did you see my post?’”
