GANGTOK: Prem Singh Tamang, the chief minister of Sikkim, has proposed a special increment to women employees who give birth to a second baby and two increments for a third child.  This is to r to encourage childbirth among indigenous communities and combat declining fertility rates in the nation's least populous state.

The Sikkim Krantikari Morcha-led cabinet announced on November 14, 2021, that women in government employment would be entitled to 365 days of maternity leave and new fathers could partake of 30 days of paternity leave. The proposal to encourage people to have more children may be a first by any state.

"We need to stop the dropping fertility rate with incentives for local people to have more children." "One child per woman," the lowest growth rate in recent years, was recorded in Sikkim's fertility rate, media reports quoted Tamang as saying. 

According to the chief minister, "regular people" who reside in Sikkim and have more than one kid would also be eligible for financial aid; the specifics will be worked out by the departments of health, women's services, and child care.

As per  report, Tamang said that his government was encouraging creation of IVF facilities in hospitals across Sikkim to encourage women unable to conceive for various reasons to try medical intervention.
