Thomas Cup winners Satwik-Chirag ruled out of Thailand Open

The star doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, who played a key role in India's historic title win at the Thomas Cup, have pulled out of the Thailand Open Super 500 tournament starting on Tuesday. It is learnt that Chirag suffered a minor injury during the tournament and the duo has told the Indian Badminton Association (BAI) on Monday about their decision to withdraw from the tournament. The world number eight pair of Satwik and Chirag lost just one match in the Thomas Cup against the Chinese Taipei duo and after losing the opening matches in the quarterfinals and semi-finals against Malaysia and Denmark respectively, the pair has also brought India back.  

World Championships silver medallist Kidambi Srikanth, who was unbeaten with six wins in the Thomas Cup, is set to be seeded 8th and is set to start his campaign against Bryce Leverdez. HS Prannoy, who won the decisive third singles in the knockout stage, will have to face Malaysia's Darren Lu in the first round. Tokyo Olympian B Sai Praneeth will take on Japan's Koki Watanabe while Sourabh Verma will take on Toma Junior Popov of France in the first round.  

In the women's singles, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu is set to face the qualifiers while Saina Nehwal is set to face Korea's, Kim Ga Yun. In the men's doubles, Mr Arjun and Dhruv Kapil, Krishna Prasad Garga and Vishnu Vardhan Gaur Panjala, Shyam Prasad and S Sunijit, Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy and Ishan Bhatnagar and Sai Preetak K pair are going to pose the challenge. In the women's doubles, the responsibility is going to be on the shoulders of Palak Arora and Unnati Hooda, Harita M. Harinarayan and Ashna Royal and Ashwin Bhat and Shikha Gautam. In mixed doubles, B Sumeeth Reddy and Ashwini Ponnappa, Raju Mohammed Rehan and Jamaluddin Anis Kausar, Ishan Bhatnagar and Tanisha Krasto and Venkat Gaurav and Juhi Devanagan are set to present the challenge.
