New Delhi: There are many large scale NGOs in the country. Some organizations receive large sums of money from the government as funds. The government funds them for social or welfare work. Such NGOs will now come under the RTI Act. The Supreme Court has mentioned this in one of its orders. The country's top court said that citizens have the right to know that their money is not being misused.

Justice Deepak Gupta and Justice Anirudh Bose said in their order that "we do not see any reason why the citizens of the country do not have the right to ask where the money given by them is being used. Do citizens have the right to know whether the funds being given by the government to an NGO or organization are being used for the same purpose?" The apex court bench said that organizations or NGOs which receive large sums of money from the government fall under the category of ' public authority' under Section 2H of the Right to Information Act. The Supreme Court gave this order during an appeal filed by colleges run by these kinds of organizations.
