Many battles have been fought in the history of India, stories of which are still told with great pride. Although the main reason for most of the battles was to establish authority over other states, about 375 years ago, a war was fought due to a very strange reason. Today we are going to tell you in detail about this strange war. This war is strange because it was just for a watermelon. You will be surprised to know that thousands of soldiers were killed in this terrible war.
This war is known as 'Matire ki Raad'. However, in some parts of Rajasthan, watermelon is called Matira and Raad means quarrel. The battle called 'Matire ki Raad' was fought in 1644 AD. The village of Silva of Bikaner state and Jakhani village of Nagaur state were adjacent to each other. These two villages were the last frontier of both the princely states. A plant of watermelon grew in the border of Bikaner state, but one of its fruits went to the border of Nagaur state.
Now the people of Bikaner believed that if the watermelon plant is in their range then the fruit also belongs to them, but the people of Nagaur said that when the fruit has come to their limits then it belongs to them. There was a quarrel between the two states about this matter and gradually this quarrel turned into a battle.
Bikaner's army was led by Ramchandra Mukhiya, while Nagaur's army was led by Singhvi Sukhmal. However, the kings of both the states did not know anything about it till then, because then King Karan Singh, the ruler of Bikaner was on an expedition while Rao Amar Singh, the ruler of Nagaur was in the service of the Mughal Empire. Both the kings accepted the subjugation of the Mughal Empire. When the two kings came to know about this war, they demanded the Mughal court to intervene in it. However, by then it was too late. War broke out before the matter reached the Mughal court. Although the Nagaur state was defeated in this war, thousands of soldiers were killed from both sides in it.
