Mahadev appeared as Shivling
According to the scriptures, Mahadev appeared for the first time on the day of Mahashivaratri. Shiva's manifestation was in the form of Jyotirlinga i.e. Shivalinga of fire. The Shivling has neither beginning nor end. It is said that in order to locate the Shivling, Brahmaji in the form of a swan was trying to see the topmost part of the Shivling but he could not succeed. He could not even reach the topmost part of the Shivling. On the other hand Lord Shri Vishnu could not reach at the Bottom post part Shivling by Varah.
The story of twelve Jyotirlingas :
According to the Shiv Purana, twelve Jyotirlingas appeared across the country on the day of Mahashivaratri. These 12 Jyotirlingas includes Somnath Jyotirlinga, Mallikarjuna Jyotirlinga, Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga, Omkareshwar Jyotirlinga, Kedarnath Jyotirlinga, Bhimashankar Jyotirlinga, Vishwanath Jyotirlinga, Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga, Nageshwar Jyotirlinga, Rameshwar Jyotirlinga, and Ghrishneshwar Jyotirlinga. Mahashivaratri is also celebrated for the appearance of these 12 Jyotirlingas.
