Former tennis great Boris Becker was sentenced to two and a half years in jail by a court here on Friday in a bankruptcy case. The court has found him guilty in a case of illegally transferring thousands of dollars from a bank account after being declared bankrupt. The three-time Wimbledon champion was convicted earlier this month on four charges under the Insolvency Act. There is a provision of a maximum jail term of 7 years in this case.

The German player has transferred hundreds of thousands of pounds (dollars) from his business account to other accounts since he went bankrupt in June 2017, including the names of his ex-wife Barbara and Shirley "Lily" Baker. He has also been convicted of failing to declare an asset in Germany and hiding 825,000 euro ($895,000) bank loans and shares in a tech firm. He was acquitted in 20 other cases, including allegations that he failed to hand over several of his awards, including two Wimbledon trophies and an Olympic gold medal.

A jury of London's Southwark Crown Court acquitted him in 20 other cases. Baker had come to court with his girlfriend Lillian de Carvalho Monteiro, wearing a striped tie in Wimbledon purple and green. The six-time Grand Slam champion had denied all the allegations, saying he had cooperated with the trustees who worked to acquire his assets and had worked on expert advice.
