New Delhi: Chinese social media firm Bytedance, which owns the TikTok and Helo app, has announced the closure of its Indian business following a ban on its services in the country. The company has said that initially half of the employees will go to jobs, then gradually all jobs will go. In a joint email sent to employees, The Global Interim Chief of TikTok, Vanessa Papus and vice president of global business solutions Blake Chandli has conveyed the company's decision that the company is reducing the size of the team and the decision will affect all employees of India.

Officials have expressed uncertainty over the company's return to India. The company's email says, "When we do not know when we will return to India, we wish to do so in the coming moment." According to a Bytedance source, the company held a town hall on Wednesday, where it briefed about the closure of India's business.

The company further added, "It is disappointing that in the coming seven months, even after our efforts, we have not been given a clear direction on how and when our app can be reinstalled. In India, we are going to halve the number of our employees. We have no way but to reduce the size of our employees."
