TikTok's share of US adults' screen time approaches Netflix

USA:  Thursday by Insider Intelligence, TikTok is catching up to streaming juggernaut Netflix in terms of the amount of time US adults spend on the platforms.

In accordance with a report, TikTok usage surpassed that of YouTube two years ago and has since accelerated, particularly among US adults in their prime earning years.

In a market researcher's report, US adult TikTok users are spending an increasing amount of time on the app. "It's well ahead of user time on YouTube and catching up with Netflix."

US adults between the ages of 25 and 54 are finding TikTok to be particularly addictive.

This year, US adult users will spend roughly 56 minutes per day on TikTok on average, six minutes less than they will spend watching Netflix, according to a market tracker.

According to the study, TikTok is a major factor in the sustained increase in time spent on social networks since the pandemic. Every day, TikTok users between the ages of 18 and 24 watch an app-equivalent of a feature-length comedy film.

The amount of time "millennials and Gen X" spend watching traditional television is decreasing, and the report speculates that many TV viewers are "second-screening" with TikTok.

Despite criticism that the plan would restrict free speech, a panel of US lawmakers this week voted to advance a bill that would make it simpler to outlaw the Chinese-owned video-sharing app TikTok.

On a party-line vote, the Republican-led House Foreign Affairs Committee approved the Deterring America's Technological Adversaries (DATA) Act. However, when it comes up for a vote in the full House and Senate, free speech advocates and Democrats will oppose it.

ByteDance, a Chinese company under investigation in several nations due to privacy and surveillance concerns, is the owner of TikTok.
