HOBART: After the completion of Tasmania's Sheffield Shield first-class match against Queensland on Friday, March 17, 2023, former Australia test cricket captain Tim Paine has announced his retirement.

Between early 2018 and early 2021, wicketkeeper Paine led Australia in 23 tests while participating in 35 tests total. As Steve Smith's leadership was revoked following the ball-tampering scandal during Australia's 2018 tour of South Africa, he took over as Australia's 46th test captain.

Tim Paine stood down from the captaincy in late 2021 after it was revealed he had sent explicit text messages to a former Cricket Tasmania employee.

In test matches, Paine, who made his debut in 2010 against Pakistan at Lord's, averaged 32.63, with a highest score of 92, and recorded 157 dismissals from behind the stumps. For Australia, he also participated in 35 one-day international matches.

After making his first appearance in 2005, the Hobart-native Paine played 153 first-class matches for Tasmania over the course of 18 years.

"I am certain a lot of guys will say there has never been as good a keeper as Tim Paine in Australia."
