The Tipraha Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (TIPRA) has reaffirmed its call for village committee elections to be held as soon as possible in Tripura.

TIPRA, the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council's (TTAADC) ruling party, has sent deputations to the state's district judges, sub-divisional magistrates, and block development officials.

The party presented memorandums to officials, addressing the Governor of Tripura and requesting his involvement in holding village body elections. According to the 15th Finance Commission's recommendations, if the elections were not held soon, the flow of cash in the villages would be hampered.

In Tripura, there are 587 village committees that come under the sixth schedule regions. "The formation of new village bodies is urgently required. Otherwise, the Centre's support for development projects would be halted. The majority of individuals living in village committee areas already lack access to basic services. "In this environment, any disruption in the flow of funding will halt the development of planned sites," a TIPRA motha leader explained.

He also stated that if the party finds it necessary, it will approach the Court to request early elections in the village bodies. "If our demands are not granted through democratic means, we will have no choice but to seek judicial intervention," the leader stated. According to TTAADC sources, a village committee receives roughly Rs 1 million per year for the implementation of different development initiatives.

The elected village bodies' term ended on March 7, 2021, however polls were postponed owing to an increase in COVID cases. "What's wrong with village committees in Tripura if polls can be conducted in UP?" the politician said.
