Tirupati: An incident on Saturday shook the pilgrimage town. A woman Sandhya (30) drowned when the vehicle suddenly got stuck in the flood. It rained heavily for nearly two hours in Tirupati on Friday night as several low-lying areas, including RUBs, were inundated. According to SV University police, an eight-member family from Mudigere town in Raichur was coming in an SUV to Tirumala for darshan. The driver, unaware of the depth of the water, went into the flood waters. The vehicle got stuck in the water midway. Due to panic, the doors of the vehicle got jammed and they could not get out of the vehicle. There was about eight feet of water and the vehicle was completely submerged. Torrential rain and darkness added to their problems. Frightened family members made constant noise.

Nearby people and auto drivers informed the police. Meanwhile, some youths of the area risking their lives jumped into the water and saved four of them. According to circle inspector Rabindranath, the police who reached RUB rescued the remaining people in the vehicle, but found Sandhya dead before she could suffocate. He said the police took a child, Vinmayi (2), to Ruia Hospital, whose condition was critical. Others identified as flood survivors are Harish (Sandhya's husband), working as a software engineer in Bengaluru, who married Sandhya two years ago.

The body has been sent to SVRR Government Hospital for post-mortem. The driver Hemant was taken into custody by the SVU police for questioning. The Tirupati MP along with Railway officials, MLA B Karunakar Reddy and Corporation Commissioner PS Girisha inspected the RUB on Saturday. The MLA assured that immediate steps would be taken to avoid such incidents in future.
