Due to the poor performance in the Lok Sabha elections, the national status of parties like NCP, CPI and TMC can be lost. The Election Commission may issue a 'show cause' notice to these political parties asking why their national party status should not be abolished. The threat came only after a bad performance in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

But the threat was averted by the Election Commission's changes in its law in 2016. The Election Commission has changed its rules to review the national and state status of political parties at intervals of five years instead of every 10 years.

In fact, a political party is considered a national-level party when its candidates win at least six per cent of the votes in four or more states in the Lok Sabha or Assembly elections under the Electoral Symbols (Reservation and Allocation) Order, 1968. Besides, it has at least four MPs in the Lok Sabha. At the same time, there should be at least two per cent of the Lok Sabha seats and its candidates should win from at least three states.

The BSP also had a crisis of losing its national status, but the crisis has been averted due to good performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections.
