Kolkata: There are reports of opposition parties coming together against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader has refused to consider former Congress national president Rahul Gandhi as the face of the opposition. He is calling West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee a contender against PM Narendra Modi.

This has been stated in the internal meeting of the TMC held in Kolkata. Now that the opposition parties are gaining momentum, the statement from the TMC leader is considered crucial. Senior TMC MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay said, "We are not talking about an alliance without Congress. I have been seeing Rahul Gandhi for a long time. He has not yet developed himself as an alternative to Modi. The entire country wants 'Didi,' so we will put Mamata's face in front in the campaign.''

Sudeep further said, "Rahul Gandhi cannot defeat Narendra Modi, while a communist party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) has no importance in the country.'' Recently, CM Mamata's nephew Abhishek had also termed the Congress party as weak through a statement. The TMC has always respected Congress President Sonia Gandhi, but whenever it comes to Rahul Gandhi, party leaders have objected. The party wants Mamata to be the face of the opposition and TMC leaders have raised this demand several times. However, CM Banerjee has so far been saying that the unity of the opposition is more important to her than an office.
