New Delhi: The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has petitioned the Supreme Court to intervene in the state's law-and-order situation ahead of municipal corporation elections in Tripura. The TMC leadership told the Supreme Court on Monday that the state's law-and-order situation is deteriorating by the day. After the TMC filed a complaint citing violence against the party's members in the state, the Court ordered the Tripura government to provide security to campaigners in the state.

The TMC has petitioned the Supreme Court about the state of law and order in the election-bound state. The contempt petition, which was filed on Tuesday, will be heard by the Supreme Court. The TMC claims that alleged attacks on election campaigners by other party members have grown. Sushmita Dev, a TMC campaigner, had her car vandalised in Agartala while campaigning for civic body elections. The party has now appealed to the Supreme Court to have the security problem resolved.

The Tripura government earlier this month was ordered by the Supreme Court bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and Vikram Nath to ensure that no political party is prevented from exercising its electoral rights in accordance with the law, and from campaigning in a peaceful and orderly manner in the upcoming local elections.
