CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma Subramanian said on Saturday that preliminary data from a whole-genome sequencing facility suggested that the BA.4. Omicron variant could be present in the state.

After the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) issues its report, confirmation will be sought. If verified, this will be the second case of BA.4.Omicron, following a case reported on Friday in Telangana.

The minister said, a 19-year-old female patient who resides in a gated community in Navalur, Chennai, and tested positive on May 9 has recovered from the condition. Her mother, who was also Covid positive at the time, was carrying the BA.2 variant and indicated neither the daughter nor the mother had had any travel history.

A state public health lab with a genome sequencing lab routinely takes samples from clusters. On May 15, the public health lab forwarded the daughter's and mother's samples to the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) for whole-genome sequencing. The mother had the BA.2 sub-lineage of the Omicron variant, whereas the daughter had the BA.4 variant.
