Chennai: The coir business in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu, will be impacted when the Tamil Nadu State Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) reclassified it from white to orange, putting it into the polluting industries category. Environmentalists had previously petitioned the Madras High Court and the National Green Tribunal, South Indian Bench, claiming that coir was a harmful industry that required a licence.

The TNPCB was ordered by the Madras High Court and the National Green Tribunal to reclassify the coir industry as a polluting industry, which it did. Previously, the coir sector was classified as White, which meant that no inspection was required for a coir mill to operate in Tamil Nadu.

Officials from the TNPCB stated: "The reclassification took place on November 10th, after a directive from the Madras High Court and the National Green Tribunal. All coir industries operating in the state will be monitored on a regular basis in the future, and strict action will be taken against them if any infractions are discovered." "Coir companies in the Parambikkulam Aliyar basin are taking water illegally to clean the coconut husk and are releasing effluents," stated K. Paramsivam, head of the Parambikkulam Aliyar Irrigation project planning committee. He stated that the TNPCB's order will regulate the project's use of water.
