Birsa Munda was born on this day in 1875 in the Munda family in Chota Nagpur. The Mundas were a tribal group that lived in the Chota Nagpur plateau. On 1 October 1894, as a youth leader, Birsa started a movement for the waiver of rent from the British by gathering all the Mundas. He was arrested in 1895 and sentenced to two years in the Hazaribagh Central Prison. But Birsa and his disciples were determined to help the famine-stricken people of the region and achieved the status of a great man in their lifetime.

Birsa you have to come from somewhere
Grass-cutting scythe or wood-cutting ax
from here to there, east-west, north-south
come from anywhere my birsa
as the wind of the fields
People wait for you.

:- Poet Bhujang Meshram

This poem has been written for Birsa Munda, who is considered to be the God of tribals, who devoted his whole life in the upliftment of the tribal caste. He was called and worshiped by the people of that region as "Dharti Baba". After the growth of his influence, the Mundas of the entire region became aware of the union. Birsa ji was arrested in 1900 for inciting tribal people and was sentenced to 2 years and finally he died on 9 June 1900 due to a slow poison given to him by the British.
