Today, on April 27, Google with a Doodle has honoured Mahadevi Varma. She was a Hindi poet, freedom fighter, women's rights activist and educationist. In 1982, the great poet received the Jnanpith Award for her exceptional contributions to Indian literature on April 27. Google is praising this day to pay tribute to the transformative artist. Google Doodle, made by visitor craftsman Sonali Zohra, demonstrates the artist composing her reflections into wonderful verses under a tree by the field on a blustery evening. Also known as 'present day Meera', Mahadevi Varma was born on March 26, 1907, in Uttar Pradesh's Farukhabad in a conventional family.

She was hitched at the youthful age of nine in the year 1916, except she stayed at her parental home and continued her education at Crossthwaite Girls' School in Allahabad. In the post written by Google in its Google Doodle of Mahadevi Varma says, "While both parents encouraged their daughter to pursue her education, it was Mahadevi Varma's mother who inspired her daughter to write in Sanskrit and Hindi,"

The Google post futher adds, "Today, Mahadevi Varma is considered one of the foundational poets of the Chhayavad movement in Hindi literature," the Google Doodle post further said.

While seeking masters in Sanskrit, she wrote her first verses in secret -  only to be discovered by her roommate and friend, Subhadra Kumari Chauhan (herself a well-known poet).

Mahadevi Varma's emotional poetry, and later, essays, often focused on the experience of being a woman. Her feminist work appeared in many publications and books. Her collection of short stories, "Sketches from My Past," portrays the women she confronted while principal of an all-girls school. Mahadevi Varma championed the women's rights and also examined the issues of tradition with great affection.

She was also honoured with Padma Bhushan in 1956, Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1979, and Padma Vibhushan in 1988. She died on September 11, 1987.
