Bengaluru, Tanisha, one-and-half-year old daughter of a businessman from Dasarahalli, slipped and fell from the third-floor balcony of her house while crawling. Toddler's skull cracked open as she landed on concrete and her brain was severely injured.

The baby was rushed to a city hospital with blood clots in her brain, her cracked skull turned out to be a boon in disguise, saving the little one from undergoing a surgery.

"Usually, in case of blood clotting, that particular portion of the brain swells up, thereby affecting other parts too. In order to prevent that, we conduct a surgery to crack open a portion of the skull so that the swollen part of the brain finds room to expand, without squeezing other parts of the organ.

In Tanisha's case, as her skull was already open, we didn't have to do decompressive craniectomy (surgery to crack the skull). Once the clots were removed, she was discharged in two weeks and is doing well now", said Dr Suman Pallegar, consultant neurosurgeon at People Tree Hospital, who treated Tanisha.
