First batch of Indian athletes leaves for Tokyo Olympics, Anurag Thakur arrives at airport

The Olympic Games are set to be held in Japan's capital Tokyo from July 23 amid an outbreak of corona infection. The first batch of Indian players and paramedics has left on Saturday to participate in the Olympic Games. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur bid farewell to eight Sports Indian Players participating in Tokyo Olympics at Indira Gandhi International Airport. Anurag Thakur also congratulated the players for the victory.

Thakur was accompanied by Minister of State for Sports Nisith Pramanik, Director General of SAI Sandeep Pradhan and Indian Olympic Association President Narinder Batra, and General Secretary Rajiv Mehta along with other officials to bid farewell to the first batch of sportspersons. The Indian contingent, which left Delhi, has a total of 88 members, including 54 players, as well as associate members and IOA representatives.

The team that left on Saturday includes players and associate members related to archery, badminton, table tennis, hockey, judo, gymnastics, swimming, and weightlifting. The team has the highest number of players from the men's and women's hockey teams. The hockey teams were accorded a warm welcome at the airport with airport staff standing on both sides clapping. Top Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu arrived in Tokyo on Friday from her practice center in the US for the Olympic Games, which begins on July 23. India's only weightlifter Chanu arrived in Tokyo with national coach Vijay Sharma and assistant coach Sandeep Kumar at the Olympics.
