The medal clash began at the Tokyo Olympics today. The Indian players have started with mixed results. In men's hockey, India beat New Zealand 3-2 to give them a stunning start. Deepika Kumari and Praveen Jadhav have advanced to the quarterfinals of the mixed archery event. India's Elavenil Valariwan and Apurvi Chandela could not qualify for the final in the women's 10m air rifle programme in the shooting. India's Sushila Devi suffered a failure in judo.

In men's hockey, India defeated New Zealand 3-2 in pool A of the men's category. For India, skipper Harmanpreet Singh (26th and 33rd minutes) scored two goals and Rupinder Pal Singh (10th minute) scored one goal. For New Zealand, Ken Russell scored the first goal in the sixth minute and Stephen Janes (43rd minute). This was the 8th clash between India and New Zealand at the Olympic Games. This is the 5th time that the Indian team has won.

With this, China won the first gold medal in Tokyo Olympics. In the women's 10m air rifle programme, China's Yang Quinan won the gold medal in the final with an Olympic record of 251.8 points. Russia's Anastasia Galasina won silver and Switzerland's Nina Cristian won bronze medals. India shooters Elavenil Valariwan and Apurvi Chandela were eliminated in the qualification round. Deepika and Praveen have managed to overcome the difficult challenge of Chinese Taipei in the pre-quarterfinals of the combined archery programme.
