Bitcoin price fell to a one-week low on Tuesday, buffeted by nervousness ahead of an impending Federal Reserve interest-rate hike and greater regulatory scrutiny of the cryptocurrency sector. The cryptocurrency has remained close to the keenly observed USD 21,000-22,000 price barrier.

The value of the world's largest and most popular cryptocurrency fell by more than 4percent to USD 21,069. According to CoinGecko, the global cryptocurrency market cap is back above USD 1 trillion today, despite falling more than 5 percent in the last 24 hours to USD 1.01 trillion.

Ether, the second largest cryptocurrency and the token linked to the Ethereum blockchain, plummeted more than 7 percent to USD 1,418. Meanwhile, dogecoin was trading about 4 percent down today at USD 0.06, while Shiba Inu was down over 7percent to USD 0.010.

Other cryptocurrencies have also dropped in the previous 24 hours, including XRP, Solana, BNB, Litecoin, Stellar, Chainlink, Tron, Apecoin, Avalanche, Polkadot, Polygon, Tether, and Uniswap.

Meanwhile, Coinbase Global Inc is being investigated by the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for inappropriately allowing Americans to trade digital assets that should have been registered as securities, according to Bloomberg News. The SEC's enforcement unit's investigation precedes the agency's investigation into an alleged insider trading scheme, which was announced last week.
