MALE: According to state media citing figures from the Ministry of Tourism, tourist arrivals in the Maldives surged by 138 percent in 2021 compared to 2020, with Indians accounting for the majority of visitors.  According to accounts, the Maldives registered 1.3 million visitor arrivals in 2021, up from 55,494 in 2020, according to state-media reports.

According to the Tourism Ministry, India was the top source of tourists to the Maldives in 2021, accounting for 22.1 percent of all arrivals.  Russia and the United Kingdom each accounted for 16.8 percent and 7.2 percent of all arrivals, respectively.

Meanwhile, according to PSM News, Ali Razzan, Senior Executive Director of the Ministry of Tourism, the country's fifth Tourism Master Plan will be drafted in three months. According to reports, the plan would focus on continuing to recover from the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Maldives' gross domestic product is based on tourism, which accounts for about 28 percent of the total.
