Toyota is gearing up to introduce its first electric car model equipped with an advanced autonomous driving system designed for the Chinese market next year, according to its joint venture with Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC). This move aims to regain market share in China by catching up with local competitors in hybrid technology, batteries, and intelligent vehicles.

At an event in Guangzhou, GAC Toyota announced ambitious innovation targets, including the launch of the Bozhi 3X SUV in 2025. This SUV will be the first model equipped with an advanced driving system capable of providing assistance for parking and navigating urban and highway traffic. The company aims to lead among foreign brands in autonomous driving technology offerings in China.

Collaborating with Momenta Global, a startup specializing in autonomous driving software, GAC Toyota is developing this advanced system. They are also partnering with Huawei to integrate Huawei's in-vehicle operating software, starting with an electric sedan slated for launch in 2025.

Looking ahead, Toyota plans to introduce an iron phosphate lithium battery between 2026 and 2027. This innovation is expected to slash production costs for its bZ4X electric vehicle by 40%, enhancing affordability and competitiveness in the Chinese market.

Despite ranking fifth in car sales among all brands in China for the first four months of this year, Toyota faced a 22% decline compared to the same period in 2023, as reported by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers. This strategic push into advanced autonomous electric vehicles underscores Toyota's commitment to future-proofing its offerings and expanding its footprint in one of the world's largest automotive markets.

The automaker has already unveiled an ambitious roadmap for advancing new EV technologies. This includes implementing Giga casting to streamline manufacturing processes, introducing self-propelled production lines for increased efficiency, integrating hypersonic rocket technology to enhance overall operational speed and productivity, and developing next-generation batteries aimed at significantly extending vehicle range while simultaneously reducing production costs. These initiatives underscore Toyota's commitment to innovation and sustainability in the electric vehicle sector, positioning itself as a leader in driving future advancements in automotive technology.
