Patna: Three individuals lost their lives, and one was hospitalized after allegedly consuming adulterated alcohol in Bihar's Sitamarhi district, as reported by the media. Subsequently, three people were apprehended for distributing counterfeit liquor.
Upon receiving information that two individuals were undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Sitamarhi due to consuming spurious liquor, the police arrived on the scene on the night between Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately, one of them, identified as Awadesh Kumar, had already succumbed to the effects. The police stated that the exact cause of death can only be determined after a post-mortem examination, according to media reports.
Another individual, identified as Roshan Rai, is presently under medical care at the hospital, and the police are coordinating with his family members, according to the reports.
During the investigation, the police uncovered two more deaths in the area linked to the consumption of spurious liquor. Although the village had reported the deaths, the bodies were cremated without notifying the police.
“We were informed that two bodies were cremated by their families. However, we have managed to recover one body and have sent it for post-mortem. The exact cause of their deaths will be determined only after the post-mortem report is available. We have suspended a police personnel and a Chokidar for negligence,” said District SP Manoj Tiwari, as reported.
The authorities also seized approximately 90 bottles of liquor from the possession of the accused, according to the reports.
Despite the Bihar government's ban on the sale and consumption of alcohol in 2016, incidents of liquor smuggling persist in the state, with ongoing efforts to combat bootleggers. In April of this year, over 30 people died after consuming spurious liquor in East Champaran district.
