Guwahati: A tragic incident unfolded in Assam's Sonitpur district on Saturday when a wild elephant claimed the lives of four people, including two forest officials. Pirai Sudhan, the District Forest Officer (DFO), confirmed that the incident occurred in Dhiraimajuli, located in the Barsala constituency of Sonitpur district.

The first victim was attacked by the wild elephant while he was outside his house late at night. Another person lost his life while attempting to chase away the animal. The elephant, which had wandered into Dhirai Majuli village from the nearby Dhekiajuli forest, later trampled two forest officials to death while they were patrolling the area.

The deceased forest officials were posted under the Amribari range. In addition to the human casualties, the elephant also attacked cattle in the area, creating panic among the villagers. Upon receiving the news, MLA Ganesh Kumar Limbu from Barsala Assembly constituency, along with forest officials including the DFO, rushed to the spot to assess and control the situation.

Efforts are currently underway to drive the elephant back into the forest. Further details about the incident are awaited.
