Patna: Ramdev Rai, a senior leader of Bihar Congress and MLA from Bachwara of Begusarai has passed away. Ramdev Rai suffers from cancer. His health was poor for the past few months. His situation became critical on Monday night. After which he was admitted to a private hospital in Patna. He breathed his last in the hospital. With the death of Ramdev Rai, there has been a wave of mourning in Bihar Congress. Congress leaders have expressed grief. Many leaders including RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Speaker of Legislative Assembly Vijay Chaudhary have paid tribute to Ramdev Rai.

Ramdev Rai was elected as MLA for the sixth time: Ramdev Rai had become an MLA for the 6th time after winning the 2015 assembly elections. He started social work as a student leader from the age of 13. At the age of 29, for the first time in 1972, he won the election from Bachwara assembly constituency and reached the assembly. In 1973, he became a minister. He won the second time in 1977 from Bachwara Assembly seat. In the election of 1980, he set a precedent by winning Bachwada assembly seat for the third time in a row.

Defeated Karpoori Thakur in the Lok Sabha elections: Ramdev contested in the Lok Sabha elections in 1984 against former CM Karpoori Thakur from Samastipur and won the Lok Sabha by winning. He won the election as an independent candidate from the Bachwara Legislative Assembly in the February 2005 assembly election due to not getting a ticket from the Congress. In the elections held in October 2005, he won the election on a Congress ticket and made his place in the Bihar Assembly.
