The government branch of India, TRAI, has started the consultation process on the numbering scheme in India. In this, it is being asked whether mobile and landline numbers should be the same or not. The consultation letter of the regulatory department came in May after the Department of Telecommunications sought its recommendations to ensure adequate resources. TRAI said on Friday that the purpose of this consultation paper is to analyze the changes affecting the national numbering scheme and identify ways to manage resource management and allocation policy to ensure an adequate number of resources.

For your information, TRAI also wants to know whether only the mobile number containing the data can be transferred from the current 10 digit number to the 13 digit number. The government has already said that the 13-digit number will be used for machine-to-machine communication.

Opinion in writing above this can be filed till 21 October and counter comments can be filed by 4 November. The total number of telephone subscribers in India stood at 1186.63 million as of the end of June. The last such process was in 2003. At that time there was a lot of review on the numbering plan. This created resources for 750 million connections. It consisted of 450 million mobiles and 300 million basic phones.
