Washington: New York's East Aurora Police say a train derailed Monday night in the area of Main St. and Riley St. although no one was hurt. He said he received a call that an engine derailed on the Buffalo-Pittsburgh railroad around 10:50 p.m. The train was going from Salamanca to Buffalo.

Police Chief Shane Krieger said that an engineer and trainee were on board, but they had no injuries. The crew says that 15 of the total 98 wagons and three engines descended from the tracks. The first five boxes were empty. All the boxes from the track are fine, there is no break in them. Although diesel fuel has leaked from the engine, he said that a total of 1,000 gallons were leaked.

Police evacuated people from 41 houses in the four-block area on either side of the railway, though they were allowed to return on Tuesday morning. Preliminary investigations suggest that trains typically go through residential areas at about 25 mph, so speed may not be the cause of this accident. Investigators are still looking into whether there was a problem with the track or an old switch in the area that could have led to the incident.
