Trans prisoner worries that transitioning to a male prison "wouldn't survive"

Edinburgh: A "genuine" transgender prison inmate in Cornton Vale, Scotland, who is serving a life sentence, has claimed she wouldn't feel safe in a male prison. Isla Bryson, who was briefly detained at the facility for two counts of rape before transitioning, caused a media storm and raised questions.

According to Sophie Eastwood, who spoke to the Daily Record on Monday, "someone probably trying to take advantage of the system" was to blame for the damage done to the public's perception of trans people in general, not because of any trans people's behaviour.

True trans prisoners are now less safe than we were as a result, according to the statement.

Eastwood, 38, received a life sentence for fatally strangling a cellmate in 2004. 2019 saw the end of her minimum 15-year term. She went by the name Daniel and was incarcerated for reckless driving at the time of the murder. In 2017, she made her transition and relocated to Cornton Vale.

She told the newspaper, "I think I'm in the right place and don't think I could survive in the male estate.

After last month's uproar over its decision to house Bryson with other female inmates, the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) decided to review its policies for handling trans inmates. After being accused of raping two women, she changed her name from Adam Graham.

The SPS moved Bryson to a male wing in a different jail amid the outcry from the public. The service determined that her presence at Cornton Vale had never placed any prisoners at risk of sexual assault.

The issue is still very contentious. Earlier this month, during a BBC interview, Scottish Transport Minister Jenny Gilrut was pressed to specify whether Bryson belonged in a prison for men or one for women. She refused to respond directly, saying that the fact that they were a rapist was more crucial.
