Imphal: Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Thokchom Satyabrata Singh said that his department is making efforts at its level to solve the problem of inflation. The main reason for the rising prices of essential commodities in Manipur is the problem of transportation and non-availability of manpower during the COVID-19 pandemic, the state assembly was informed on Tuesday.

Responding to the calling attention motion on the issue of price hike, the Minister said that the situation is unusual during the pandemic. On the concluding day of the monsoon session, he said transportation problems and non-availability of workers in loading and unloading of essential goods like rice are the main reasons for the rise in prices.

Singh, however, did not elaborate on the "problems" of the transport. The minister said that his department deals with 19 items but it is not under its control to fix the price of petroleum products. Earlier, speaking on the calling attention, opposition Congress member Keesham Meghchandra Singh accused the BJP government in the state of failing to check the rise in prices of essential commodities. Speaker Yumnam Khemchand Singh later adjourned the house indefinitely. The monsoon session started on Friday.
