Tree falls on tin shed in Akola temple, 7 killed, 23 injured

AKOLA: 7 persons died and 23 others injured when a tree fell on a tin shed under which people were standing in a temple surroundings after heavy wind and rains in Maharashtra's Akola district, local administration said on Monday, April 10.

According to Akola Collector Nima Arora, the event took place on Sunday, April 9,  at around 7.30 p.m. at the Babuji Maharaj temple in Paras village, Balapur taluka, when people had assembled for the "maha aarti."

Devendra Fadnavis, the state's deputy chief minister, expressed sorrow over the occurrence and promised that the government would compensate the relatives of the victims. According to the district officials, each deceased person's family would receive Rs 4 lakh in compensation, while those injured will receive financial aid in accordance with government regulations.

The district administration said that a 100-year-old tree fell on a tin shed under which about 40 people were standing as a result of the strong winds and rain.

23 additional people were injured in addition to the five men and two women who died. According to a press announcement, five of them suffered significant injuries. Police and district disaster management officials swarmed the area as soon as they received information and immediately began the rescue effort.

The district administration reported that the injured people were taken urgently to the Akola general hospital. The two women who perished in the tragedy were from Jalgaon and Buldhana, and they were 50 and 55 years old.

Out of the 5 deceased men, 2 people aged 55 and one 35 years old were residents of Akola. The 2 other men were yet to be identified, the release said. Deputy Chief Minster  Fadnavis in a tweet expressed grief over the incident.
He said CM Eknath Shinde has decided to give compensation to the families of the dead from the government's side and the Chief Minister's Relief Fund.
