New Delhi:  Trinamool Congress, party heavyweight Arjun Singh joined the Bharatiya Janata Party today. Singh is an MLA from Bhatpara and has been representing the constituency since 2001.This is  a big setback for West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and her party.

This switch has revealed the chinks in Mamata’s party ahead of the parliamentary elections. Singh joined the BJP in the presence of Mukul Roy and Kailash Vijayvargiya. Arjun Singh wields considerable influence in areas between North Kolkata to Nadia and has helped the party win several elections due to his statewide connections.

As per the media reports, Singh has been highly active for the TMC at the ground level and has done booth management for the party at panchayat as well as Parliamentary elections.

Singh is a popular leader in the Hindi speaking belt and with his entry in the BJP, the party will only gain with his presence. He palyed an important role in attracting   the votes from the Hindi-speaking region in favour of TMC in 2014 Lok Sabha elections leading to TMC victory in the polls.

According to sources, he will most likely be fielded against TMC MP Dinesh Trivedi from Barrackpore.

Meanwhile, the Congress alliance has also started crumbling ahead of the Lok Sabha Polls and many key leaders from all over the country have switched sides. Sujay Vikhe Patil, has joined the BJP, while three Congress MLAs from Gujarat have also joined the Safrron  party.
