Agartala: Police in Tripura on Thursday arrested five people linked to the ruling BJP after a group of people grievously attacked a Block Development Officer (BDO) and nine other government employees in southern Tripura. BDO Vyjayantha Sarkar along with other officials were on the way to organize a special camp under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Rural) in Madhabnagar gram panchayat when they were attacked, a district administration official said.

Around 50 to 60 men armed with sticks attacked the officers, injuring the BDO and nine others seriously. Before leaving the spot, the miscreants also snatched mobile phones and other items from the BDO and officials. The police have so far arrested five people in this case and the search is on for the rest of the people involved in the attack. Condemning the attack, a delegation of Tripura Civil Service officials met South Tripura DM, Saju Waheed A and demanded strict action against the culprits.

Strongly condemning the incident, Tripura Chief Secretary Kumar Alok said that the BDO of Poangbari block of South Tripura district was attacked in a cowardly manner on Wednesday when he was discharging his official duties.
