Washington: Former US President Donald Trump has garnered 120 electoral college votes, while Vice President Kamala Harris has secured 99, based on projections as polling concluded in multiple states by 9 p.m. Eastern Time.

Trump appears on track for a potential victory, with projections showing him likely to win key swing states like Georgia and North Carolina. However, Harris still has a path to victory, even if she falls short in these two states. By securing wins in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, she could reach the critical 270 electoral votes needed for a narrow victory.

These projections cover reliably partisan states that have historically voted solidly for either the Republican or Democratic parties. Notably, they do not include any of the key battleground states, where the final results will be crucial in deciding the 2024 presidential race.

Trump is expected to carry Kentucky, Indiana, West Virginia, South Carolina, Florida, Oklahoma, Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Louisiana.

Harris is projected to win Vermont, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Illinois, and New York.

To secure the presidency, a candidate must win at least 270 of the 538 electoral college votes. The outcome remains uncertain as votes continue to be counted in the decisive battleground states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada.

These early projections, released soon after polls closed in some states, are based on historical voting patterns and early voting trends, which are expected to hold relatively steady throughout the night.

By Election Day, more than 82 million Americans had already cast their ballots, either in-person at early voting sites or by mail. This early turnout represents over 51 percent of the 158 million total votes cast in the 2020 election.

Both Harris and Trump wrapped up their campaigns with rallies in Pennsylvania and Michigan, respectively, highlighting the importance of these states. The seven battleground states, often called Swing States, hold the key to the election as they can shift between Democratic and Republican support, unlike states with more predictable voting patterns.
