The Turban is a symbol of spirituality, holiness, and humility in Sikhism. The turban is also a symbol of honor and self-respect. In the Punjabi culture, those who have selflessly served the community are traditionally honored with turbans. The turban also signifies piety and purity of mind.
The founders of Sikhism declared wearing the dastaar, often known as the Sikh turban, a requirement of faith. It is not to be taken as merely ornamental cultural accouterment. When a Sikh man or woman wears a turban, it stops being just a piece of fabric and merges into the Sikh's head.

The turban and other religious symbols worn by Sikhs have great spiritual and historical significance. The wearing of a turban has various symbolic meanings, including those of piety, self-respect, courage, and sovereignty. However, there is only one reason why every practicing Sikh wears a turban: out of love and devotion to the wishes of their religious forefathers. It is a true mark of sovereignty and a crown.
The turban became a sign of dignity in ancient India. Turbans were only permitted on high-caste priests, chief officials, and kings of India; lower-caste individuals were not permitted to wear them. Invading Mughals ruled that only Islamic rulers and officials would be permitted to wear turbans in the 16th century. All of the Sikh Gurus, starting with Guru Nanak, as well as many of their followers, donned turbans. A symbol of equality that defied caste and privilege, the Sikh turban. The Fifth Guru Arjan Dev protested the exploitation of the ruling class by declaring, "Mughals wear a single turban, we shall wear two." Due to this, Sikh warriors began to favor the Dumalla, a type of twin turban worn one over the other. In 1669 CE, Tenth Guru Gobind Singh formally established the initiated Khalsa Warriors sect, making the turban mandatory attire for all Sikhs.
