Heavy snowfall in Turkey has hampered flight services and road traffic including the major cities of Istanbul and Ankara, and weather forecasters have warned that the cold spell might linger until the end of next week.

"Turkey is trapped in a polar vortex, with temperatures going to decline to - 14 degrees Celsius in some regions. This episode is predicted to linger around two weeks on and off "Adil Tek, a meteorologist, informed the media on Sunday. He stated, "This is one of the longest cold periods in the recent decade."

On Saturday and Sunday, Turkish Airlines stated that 77 flights from Istanbul's Sabiha Gokcen airport, located on the Asian side of the city, were cancelled or delayed due to weather conditions. Istanbul's land traffic has also been hampered. The Turkish State Meteorological Services reported that up to 20 cm of snow had fallen in certain parts of the city.
