Twitter Introduces new privacy features

Twitter is preparing to test new privacy features that will give users more control over their following lists and who can view their tweets and likes. The social media company confirmed to Mashable that it will begin testing plenty of new privacy features as early as next week. The wide variety of changes has the ability to alter fundamental aspects of what it has meant to have a Twitter account -at least up until now.

"We understand that no one size fits all approach to privacy," said a Twitter spokeswoman, "therefore we're eager to roll out more features and tools to enable individuals on Twitter to personalize their experience."

According to a Twitter representative, the new capabilities are extensive and address long-standing complaints about the network. Importantly, not all of them are likely to be adopted by Twitter. Nonetheless, they show that the firm is at least conscious that more has to be done when it comes to consumer privacy (like encrypting direct messages end-to-end).

To begin, one of the teased features is the capability to automatically hide old tweets once a certain period of time has passed. This isn't the same as having tweets deleted automatically, but it's a start. Another potential feature is the power to remove specific followers (which users do now by blocking and then immediately unblocking a follower's account). Yet another is the opportunity to make your likes visible to only certain subsets of users -- your followers, everyone, or other as-of-yet undefined groups.
