New Delhi: The ongoing dispute between the Government of India and Twitter over the new IT rules is now over. In fact, after a series of protests, microblogging site Twitter has agreed to follow the new central government guideline. A Twitter spokesperson said on Monday (May 31, 2021) that, "Twitter tries to comply with the laws in force in India. We are committed to the principles of transparency, commitment to strengthen every voice and to protect freedom of expression and privacy under Indian law.?
The matter was heard in the Delhi High Court on Monday afternoon. A single judge bench of Justice Rekha Palli had issued a notice to Twitter asking it to respond to the matter in the next hearing. The next hearing in the case is on July 6. The court passed the order on a petition filed by advocate Amit Acharya seeking an order to implement the new IT Rules 2021 issued by the Central Government to Twitter India and Twitter INC withimmediate effect within the stipulated time frame.
Earlier, WhatsApp was also not in favour of implementing the new rules of the Government of India. However, he has later agreed to follow the new guideline. Facebook and Google have also implemented the new guideline without any opposition.
