The social media site Twitter has finally agreed to the central government and has now started blocking objectionable accounts. Twitter has taken this decision for fear of possible arrest and a financial penalty of its company's superior officer. Twitter has now begun to block government-marked accounts that post flammable and divisive posts. The US micro-blogging company has been under pressure for the past few days, as many posts were made on Twitter with the #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide hashtag.

Following pressure from the central government, Twitter assured the government that it was monitoring the issue, overseeing the list of such accounts sent by the Ministry of Information and Technology under Section 69A of the IT Act. So far 709 accounts have been deactivated. Sources have said that there are 257 Twitter handles that shared with the hashtag #ModiPlanningFarmerGenocide, 126 of these accounts have been blocked just a few days ago.

In addition, the government suspects that 1,178 handles are linked to Khalistani, Pak elements, who disseminate false information, 583 such accounts have been blocked. Under Section 69A (3) of the IT Act, higher officials of Twitter were warned that they could face up to 7 years in prison. The Department of Information and Technology said that Twitter acts as an intermediary, hence it is responsible to follow the India Government directives. If Twitter refuses to do so, it will have to bear the brunt of it. Twitter has its own separate policy to monitor content, but after government pressure, the company has to block the accounts which the government has called objectionable.
