New Delhi: The Interim Grievance Officer of social network platform Twitter, who was appointed to India amid a tussle with the Centre over new IT rules, has resigned from his post. The new IT rules require the appointment of complaint officers in major social media companies to take action on the grievances of Indian users. Sources said, interim complaint officer Dharmendra Chatur, who was recently appointed by Twitter in India, has resigned from the post.

Chatur's name is no longer visible on the social media company's website. Under the Information Technology (Guidelines for Intermediaries and Digital Media Code of Conduct) Rules, 2021, forums are required to provide the name and contact address of the said officer on their website. Twitter declined to comment on the developments. Chatur has resigned at a time when the site, which exchanged subtle messages on new social media rules, is a target of the government.

The government has accused Twitter of deliberately not following these new rules and criticised it. The new rules have come into effect from 25th May. Twitter did not appoint necessary officers even after the extra time was over with which it has lost the right to exemption spared through the 'provision of protection' to intermediary digital platforms in India. The new rules will require major social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to take additional measures.
