Kolkata: Two Border Security Force (BSF) personnel have been arrested for raping a woman who was trying to illegally enter Bangladesh from India. A senior BSF officer has said that after arresting the assistant sub-inspector and constable late on Friday night, they were handed over to the West Bengal Police for legal action. He said that the accused have been suspended and a Court of Inquiry has been ordered against them.

The incident took place on the morning of 26 August near the Bagda border post in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. The BSF constable had arrested a vendor and a woman who was trying to illegally enter Bangladesh from India. The constable took the woman to a nearby field and allegedly raped her, while the assistant sub-inspector allegedly assisted her in the crime. The incident came to light after the woman lodged a complaint with the police.

After this incident, a war of words started between the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of West Bengal and the BJP. TMC has tweeted, ''Our country is becoming unsafe for women under the misrule of BJP! Mr Amit Shah (Union Home Minister) under your watch, a BSF officer and jawan raped a woman and threatened to face the consequences if she raised her voice. A shining example of a truly self-reliant India!''
