Two people from Assam died of asphyxiation while working as labourers at a coal mine in Meghalaya's Shallang district. They were killed in the process of exploring a new coal mine in the region. Ainuddin Ali and Sukur Ali of Boko were recognised as the victims.

According to a local, they visited the new mine last week because it was set to open this week. When they arrived at the mine, a few miners went inside to investigate the condition because it had been shut for several years.

Almost everyone made it out on time, but these two walked further into the mine to examine it. Because such mines contain other gases in them, it was thought that both had been hit by a lack of oxygen. They died inside the mines before anyone realised they hadn't come out.
