NEW DELHI: Multiple members of the infamous Irani Gang were caught for impersonating as police officials and cheating foreign nationals in the national Capital, an official said on March 16.

Delhi Police detained the suspects, Gholam Bahrani (32) and Mojtaba Zolfagari (52), who are both current residents of Noida and permanent citizens of Tehran, Iran.

Several incidences of fraud and robbery committed by a gang of four to five people posing as police officers were reported in the South West district as well as neighbouring districts, according to the police.

Rajeev Kumar, the additional Deputy Commissioner of Delhi Police said, "On March 12, an Iraqi national named Fatih Zama Muhammad Faith complained to Vasant Kunj South police station that he was standing in Mahipalpur when suddenly a car carrying three to four people approached him and introduced themselves as police officers and asked him to show his bag for checking" (Southwest).

After that, they took USD 1780 from his bag and ran away from the spot. The officer said, "During inquiry, precise information was gathered that the Irani gang members involved in the impersonation instances will gather someplace in Noida to conduct further crime on March 14.

Both the accused were caught from Noida and during the cursory search, USD 520 were recovered from the possession of Gholam and USD 600, 150 Euros and 10 Dirhams from Mojtaba. Both the accused persons were asked about the foreign currencies recovered from them and they tried to dodge the interrogation team," said the official.

"Under the name of police checks, the members approached foreigners in public locations holding bags and identified themselves informally as police officials in civil attire. They used to "pretend" to be Police or Crime Branch employees in order to search foreigners' possessions and depart the scene while removing foreign currency from their luggage "The official stated that more investigation is going on.
