BANGALORE: Two persons, including a young woman, were reportedly killed in a wild elephant attack in Meenadi in Kadaba taluk of Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district on February 20.

The deceased were identified as Ramesh Rai, a local, and Ranjitha, a worker at a milk society in Peradka. Authorities claim that Ranjitha was assaulted by the elephant as she was leaving her home to go to work.

The ferocious elephant also attacked Ramesh Rai, another victim who was present. Locals managed to move Ranjitha to a hospital, but she passed away from her injuries despite Rajesh Rai dying there and then.

Hundreds of villagers gathered at the spot and protested against the authorities. They clamoured for protection from attacks by wild animals. They were concerned that as summer arrived, wild animals, particularly elephants and leopards would emerge from the woods in search of water and food, leaving them defenceless.

The forest officials have arrived on the scene and are assessing the situation. They have assured people that the elephant would be caught and relocated.
