Srinagar: On Sunday two militants were killed in an encounter with security forces in Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir, an army official said. According to the sources, security forces launched a cordon and search operation in Hindsitapur area of Shopian district in south Kashmir following specific information about the presence of militants there, the official said.

An official said encounter broke out during a predawn operation of security forces at Hend Satioora village. "Militants opened fire when security forces zeroed in on their hiding place. Two to three militants were hiding in the area. We believe two militants were killed but the bodies are yet to be recovered," said the official. The security forces have not divulged any details about the identity of the trapped militants so far. Meanwhile, internet service has been stopped in the area as a precautionary measure.

A day before this encounter, security forces killed a top commander of Islamic State in Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK) in a pre-dawn gunbattle in Shopian. The 34-year-old militant, Ishfaq Ahmad Sofi, had recently featured in the Islamic State mouthpiece, al-Risalah, in which he asserted the need for jihad in Kashmir and owed allegiance to the outfit's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
